Over twenty years ago, Executive Director, Chelsea Leavitt was thrust into single parenthood. after witnessing her fiancé and best friend perish in a horrible car accident, six months before her first child was born. She was left to raise her child out of this trauma, alone with only her faith in God to help guide her. Over the first few years, she experienced feelings of sadness, anxiety, loneliness, abandonment and began to have difficulty with socializing. Soon after, in speaking to other single moms she realized even without the trauma, other single mothers experienced the same feelings.
It was only when Chelsea became a homeowner, that her life began to change. Chelsea improved the lives of her children through homeownership, finally having a firm foundation; a safe place to raise her children. She began to see opportunity after opportunity open up for her. Through homeownership, Chelsea became empowered and began to move mountains!
Chelsea now helps other single moms realize homeownership. She launched an LLC called S.M.I Investing. She then formed a non profit called Single Mama Initiative, encompassing a program she calls HomeLink. HomeLink provides a boost for single mom families lacking the financial or relational capitol to escape perpetual renting. This program provides a true support system for these single moms, helping them to regain a sense of hope, family, belonging, purpose, peace love and dignity, so they too, move mountains! HomeLink is a faith based two year program including financing, remodeling and mentorship.
Parents who own homes have children with: Higher graduation rates, Lower Teen Pregnancy, and Improved Life Management Skills. Home ownership has been linked to fewer behavioral problems in school and better social outcomes for these children.
Homeownership has been shown to increase the quality of the surrounding community through social capital and home investments. Homeownership increases broader civic involvement like the number of volunteer hours in the area of the home. Neighborhoods with high home ownership have a corresponding decrease in crime and homeowners themselves are less likely to be victims of violent crime. Homeownership has been proven to have physical and mental health benefits.

OUR MISSION
At Single Mama Initiative, we are committed to empowering single moms by providing them with the financial and relational capital needed to escape perpetual renting. Through our HomeLink program, we offer mentorship and financing for home ownership, allowing single mothers to build a better future for themselves and their children. Our program is rooted in scripture and modern research shows that homeownership has a positive impact on the family.
By partnering with S.M.I. Investing and donor families, we are able to acquire and repair affordable homes, while also creating a sense of community and civic involvement. Our ultimate goal is to help single mothers achieve long term financial stability and security, while also improving the quality of life for their families and surrounding neighborhoods.
How it works: Families interested in HomeLink submit an application assessing needs and financial health. Mentors create budgets and saving goals and coach qualifying families for one year. In year one, HomeLink participants search for affordable homes requiring repair. This is where S.M.I. Investing comes in. S.M.I. helps these single moms acquire the home. Volunteers repair and prepare the home for occupancy. (Additional repairs may be required within two years.) Five or more donor families provide the finances to purchase and repair the home. The donor families become one-fifth owners of a LLC for the home and receive monthly payments equivalent to a 30 - year loan at 5% of their investment. The qualifying HomeLink single mom family will be required to secure bank financing after two years, upon which each donor family will be paid in full, and homeownership is transferred to the HomeLink family.
